But that’s not all: studies have shown that too much alcohol blocks fat burning, further preventing weight loss. In addition, once alcohol enters the bloodstream, it serves as the body’s primary source of energy. The liver converts alcohol into acetate – a toxic substance that the body wants to get rid of as quickly as possible.

The fact that too much alcohol is not advisable for various reasons should not be too much news – diet or not. This article will not explicitly discuss the harmful effects of alcoholic beverages on health. What is of interest here is the extent to which it is possible to consume alcohol while losing weight – and this depends in part on a diet in question.

One of the most common ways to reduce weight is to watch your calorie intake. Plus/minus 2000 calories is the average calorie requirement of a person per day. As already mentioned, alcohol has quite a lot of calories – and this becomes apparent quite quickly when counting calories to lose weight. The problem with this is that alcohol is a so-called “empty calorie”, which means that it does not provide any other nutrients, unlike a soup plate, for example. So instead of a cocktail, you could have a filling second helping at dinner. This not only fills you up, but it also provides your body with essential nutrients, which a cocktail is known not to do.

Low carb is one of the most popular diets and ways to lose weight these days. But how does alcohol consumption fit into the concept? Nevertheless, even with a low-carbohydrate diet, a drink can be allowed. The most important thing here is which drink you choose.

Some alcoholic beverages are rich in carbohydrates and therefore rather unsuitable for low carb. For example, this includes beer, which can contain between 3 and 12 g of carbohydrates per 350 ml, depending on the type. Mixed drinks with alcohol, cocktails, and long drinks are also primarily full of sugar and are therefore real carbohydrate bombs.

If you want to drink alcohol during the low carb diet, then you can most likely access the following drinks:

Vodka, rum, whiskey and gin. These spirits contain 0 g of carbohydrates. The only important thing is that you do not mix these drinks with sugary drinks. Either enjoy them neat or mix them with low-carb alternatives.

Wine. If you want to indulge in an alcoholic drink, it is best to choose red or white wine. A glass with a capacity of about 140 ml contains about 3 to 4 g of carbohydrates. The drier the wine, the lower the carbohydrate content. Another alternative is Hessian apple wine. Unlike cider, no additional sugar is added here. A glass of 250 ml contains between 1 g and 2 g of carbohydrates, depending on the variety.

Light beer. If you don’t want to give up your beloved beer even when you’re low carb, you should look for light beer in beverage stores. A glass of 350 ml contains about 3 g of carbohydrates.

Can I drink alcohol during interval fasting?

Intermittent fasting is also currently one of the most popular forms of nutrition. People who eat this way fast at specific intervals – for example, two days a week, while eating normally on the other five days. Also popular is the so-called 16:8 variant, which involves eating for eight hours of a day and fasting for 16 hours. Those who eat healthily during the eating periods are said to lose weight permanently and without the yo-yo effect.

Lose weight despite alcohol: tips & tricks

So a little alcohol is also okay during the diet. But to make sure you’re not tempted to drink too much at parties and the like, we’ve put together some tips and tricks:

Drink plenty of water in between! The best thing to do is drink 250 ml of still water with every alcoholic drink. In this way, you help the body quickly flush the toxins out of the body and prevent a possible hangover. In addition, this way, you avoid drinking too much high-calorie alcohol simply out of thirst.

Stretch your drink! If you want more from your glass, it’s best to stretch it. Of course, this is especially recommended with wine. While 100 ml of white wine has about 60 calories, the same wine spritzer has only 30 calories – with a 50/50 mix. So you can drink two glasses with the same calorie content and get more out of it.

Be careful what you choose! If you want to indulge in a glass, always lean toward a beverage that is low in calories and/or low in carbohydrates. As already mentioned, you are best advised with dry wine.

Whichever way you turn it: Since alcohol always brings many calories, it should only be used very sparingly during a diet. But who wants to do without everything permanently? In the end, those parliamentary allowance and nourishing concepts are most effective, which can be integrated durably into everyday life.
