What is High Intensity Interval Training?

High intensity interval training consists of a short burst of high intensity exercise, followed by a low intensity exercise. This creates an environment within the body that leads to sustained fat loss, best of all, long after the exercising is over & can last up to 36 hours!

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is proven to promote lasting fat loss, even after exercise is complete. How is this possible, you may ask?

Well, HIIT promotes the use of two metabolic environments. First, the low intensity exercise, such as walking, utilizes the aerobic metabolism. This metabolic environment encourages the body to use oxygen in order to use fat and carbohydrates for energy.

This is highly efficient in the low intensity; however, this is not efficient for high intensity exercises.

The Body is unable to use this oxygen fast enough when performing a high intensity exercise. That is why it is so hard to for example run full out for a long period of time… This leads us to the second metabolic environment, that of anaerobic metabolism.

Anaerobic metabolism is the condition that occurs when the body is working at a high intensity such as running; and is unable to intake enough of that oxygen to burn those carbs and fat as energy.

This condition in turn creates an environment where the body will continue to burn calories and fat well after the initial workout is completed.

This is possible in part because of Excess Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption, or EPOC, for short. The intensity of the exercise makes the body overwork to get back to a “resting” state.

In order for the body to get back to that resting state we just discussed, the body must work to repair the damage from that high intensity blast. This “work” in turn utilizes fat stores and turns them into energy.

The beauty of this is the harder the exercise; the more benefit of fat burning and the longer the body stays in this repair stage. It could last up to 3 days and burn fat the entire time; with the body resting.

This has huge implications as being the real solution to fast weight loss. Other benefits include:

  1. Fat loss, even when resting.
  2. Increased Cardiovascular Output.
  3. Feeling great and strengthening the mind & body
  4. Retaining Muscle while burning fat.
  5. Building endurance
  6. Low impact & short duration
  7. Gaining athlete like performance abilities
  8. Increase anaerobic performance & lung capacity

Which high intensity interval training exercise is right for me?

All types of cardio can be used with interval training. Some low impact exercises that I recommend would be cycling, swimming, the elliptical and go at a pace that gets you sucking the air in; that’s how you know your on the right track. However, you will want to start slow in the beginning and a good ratio to go by is 30 seconds of intense exercise followed by 60 seconds rest, or what I like to refer to as a cool down. This is a good pace to start with and over time you can set goals to get that down to 30 seconds high intensity & 30 seconds cool down.

What about metabolic adaptation?

After you build up a tolerance you can introduce weight training into the mix and maximize the benefits. This is the ultimate way to lose weight, retain muscle, get in great cardiovascular shape & build athlete like endurance. Combined with a healthy eating plan & there’s no limit to the fat you can lose!

So I bandaged and all my favorite comfort foods…

A huge cheese pizza with extra cheese and mushrooms and pepperoni and sausage and cheesy garlic bread and roasted potato wedges with sweet barbecue dipping sauce and buffalo wings with blue cheese dipping sauce…

And an entire 2 L bottle of my favorite diet soda because I knew that eating like that wasn’t good for me…

so, I was trying to limit the damage… and as impossible and crazy as it seems… The more diet soda I drank the hungrier I got…

So, I ate, and ate, and ate, all alone until everything was gone.. I ate until I looked like a python that had swallowed a goat… But, not nearly as elegant and graceful…

And I was still hungry. I thought I was imagining things, but I wasn’t..

Yes, they may be low-calorie.. But, they help make you high-calorie..

Because artificial sweeteners are usually worse for you than real sugar.

And I’m here to tell you that number one, there is an absolute kind of bad information floating around out there number two, your suffering from cellular inflammation cellular inflammation is not only the culprit of weight gain it’s also responsible for increasing the onset of disease which results in a shorter lifespan.

Most diets that I know of ignore the fact that if we can take control of cellular inflammation we can effectively increase your ability to lose weight, burn fat, increase metabolism and keep body fat from ever coming back.

In addition to this, by taking control of cellular inflammation you can live a healthier and longer life!

Here’s the thing about inflammation… About two-thirds of the body’s defenses resides in your G.I. tract. Now, when you’re eating the wrong foods including those bad foods that are passed off as being healthy for you those foods eventually wreak havoc on those defenses.

When your defenses are broken down inflammation gains the upper hand once inflammation takes over, your body stores fat more easily and it also can’t burn fat as fast as it normally should.

Now if you had trouble losing weight in the past, it’s very likely that you’re suffering from chronic cellular inflammation that you’re not even aware of. One of the key components of my three-week diet system is that it helps you take control of that inflammation and it produces a noticeable effect on your body almost immediately.

You see, your counting calories or focusing on eating less and exercising more mainstream medicine wants us to believe that the key to weight loss is simply a matter of eating less and exercising more this is just plain bad science and deep down inside every doctor knows this.

To answer this question let me first defer to Dr. Michael dancing the medical doctor and weight loss consultant to NBC’s hit TV show the biggest loser… Here is what he said about losing weight fast..

“in theory one could drop as much as 20 pounds in a week. The truth is that nothing is wrong with losing weight rapidly, as long as you do it the right way.”

In my own research, I found that the majority of the safety data out there regarding weight loss has to deal with the methods used for losing weight rather than how fast the weight is lost. So I’m not really certain where the notion came from that says the safest or best way to lose weight is at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds per week.

Consider this according to the Center for disease control if you are overweight which is defined as having a BMI of 25 or higher you are significantly more susceptible to developing coronary heart disease, type II diabetes, endometrial cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, hypertension, dyslipidemia, stroke, liver disease, gallbladder disease, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, osteoarthritis and gynecological problems.

Considering all the dreadful diseases and complications associated with being overweight doesn’t it make perfect sense that you should be doing everything possible to get rid of all that extra weight you’re carrying around as fast as you can? So you’re probably wondering how the three-week diet is so different than all those other diet plans out there?

Well first of all, most of the diet plans out there approach weight loss with a slow and sensible approach… Yes, it’s true that if you eat certain foods and work out really hard for an hour or so every day you will lose weight!

The problem however is that the weight comes off way too slowly because these types of diet plans don’t attack the stubborn stored body fat let me explain..

Contrary to popular belief most of us actually do burn fat for a couple of hours each day when we eat a meal.

We typically get a bit fatter once that meal is been digested in those calories have provided us a bit of energy for a few hours we then start to burn off fat and as a result we get a little thinner.

When we eat the fat we consume is broken down into fatty acids these fatty acids are very small and their able to travel in and out of cell walls to make themselves available as energy the body.

But, when those fatty acids can’t be used we get ready to eat our next meal the remaining fatty acids are stored away in our fat cells and that’s where the problems begin.

You see, once those fatty acids head back to the fat cells to be stored away for later they combined with two other fatty acids and a glycerol molecule to create what’s known as a triglyceride.

In relative terms triglycerides are very big and because of their size they are unable to exit the fat cells like those free-flowing fatty acids can. Because of this, these triglycerides get stuck inside the fat cells and can’t be used by the body for energy.

As a result, these triglycerides become that stubborn body fat that is so incredibly difficult to get rid of.

But here’s the thing those triglycerides can be targeted and they can be broken back down into those fatty acids that can be burned by the body for energy. When we break down those triglycerides it’s kind of like dumping rocket fuel into your vehicle’s gas tank…

Those broken down triglycerides flood the body with a great source of energy that it actually loves to burn.

But only when the body has been primed to burn that fat as it is when you’re following the three-week diet. Now, again the problem with most diets out there is that they don’t address or target that stored body fat…

Instead, they are designed to burn up only the fatty acids from the foods we eat and preventing them from turning into triglycerides in the first place.

So without adding additional fat to the body and by forcing you to participate in a very strenuous exercise program, you can effectively still lose weight. The problem is that the weight just comes off very, very slowly and this is what makes the three-week diet so unique.

The 3 week diet not only stops your body from forming new triglycerides, it also directly targets the stubborn body fat that you already have while forcing your body to burn that fat for all of its daily energy needs.

Quite simply, what takes most diets 2 to 3 months to accomplish, the three-week diet gets done in just 21 days! Now I probably don’t need to tell you that the key to weight loss is maximizing the number of hours each day that your body is burning fat.

My Journey To Quit Smoking, Once and for Ever… Week One

Paradigm shift, can I do this…? Can I actually quit smoking? Have I ever really given it an honest effort? Let me tell you, unless you’ve tried to quit smoking before, you are in for a huge surprise.

You will come to grips of what a HORRIBLE addiction cigarette smoking really is.

Its almost as if these things are chemically engineered to be next to impossible to quit. People liken tobacco addiction to Heroin addiction and I don’t really know but one thing I can say, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to do!

I remember that day clearly, 17 years ago, how ignorant I was when I first took that puff of a cigarette. I truly thought that I was master of my domain, I was in control… There’s no way I’d get hooked… Right? Wrong.

The world began spinning around me, I literally felt sick to my stomach and my body was giving me every sign that this was the beginning of a horrible mistake. I at the time was thirteen years old, in grade 7 and felt that need to fit in.

I sometimes think to myself, how bad of a serious drug addict I’d become if it ever came to that, I mean if cigarettes can control almost every aspect of my life like they had been for the last 17 years, imagine if I had gotten “hooked” on heroin. I mean I can see cigarettes for what they are now but the truth is that I LOVE cigarettes

So, as I begin writing this all that pain keeps flooding back and I find it hard to contemplate what exactly is happening to my body post cigarettes. You see, my entire world has become flipped upside down and I’m thinking that I’m really going to have to re-learn how to cope with life. In fact, I know that I am.  Here I am before you professing my one-week (7-days) without any cigarette. Not even ONE puff.

One thing I’ve learned throughout this week, so far, is that in order for me to be successful, there is absolutely no way that I can even allow just one puff. That’s right; I realized THE ONLY WAY is to never look back.

In my quest for finding information about quitting, i keep hearing the same worrisome thing… Cut out the behavior cues that would lead to smoking. However, I LOVE coffee.. and how the hell can I justify biting off more than I can chew and quitting more than one addiction at a time.

My advice is to take it hour-by-hour and day-by-day.. Don’t look at the bigger picture and focus on each individual smoke free day.

heart health benefits of quitting smokingSo here I am, I can breathe… I may spend 99% of the day thinking of cigarettes, and have (almost) physical neck pain (although probably from restless sleeping habits, but I do wonder…) and all I can do is hope it gets easier soon.

So, does it get better? Well, I have hope! Most people say relapse is normal, but I’m not listening to that because that just sets me up for failure, right from the get-go. I know from experience that giving in just that one time will be the nail in the coffin for me.

So more advice, it is not OK to ever smoke again.. Make sure you get this point across to yourself.  Think of all those years you smoked and how it took this long for you to get fed up enough to give quitting an honest try. Remember all that pain, hardship and progress goes away with just one puff. Worse off, you might die before you give quitting another try.

I mean if it took me 17 years to actually get to this point, I might not have that much time left to finally hit that POINT OF WANTING TO QUIT AGAIN. Go figure, day 7 and I am having the worst craving… Go figure the same morning I’m talking about, I didn’t even grab my e-cig this morning.

Be strong and join me in never having another puff, ever again. Life is too short for bull-shit like this.

Who would have known that this journey of quitting smoking could lead to so many self-discoveries? Smoking for as long as I have, I find that I really have no idea how to deal with anything, because my response has always been to light up a cigarette. I am the most vulnerable person right now and that I have to accept.

I have to wonder whether things will get better, or if this is life now. Maybe, because I’m an animal, I have this primal urge to always be on guard and feel as if punching someone or flipping out is a right course of action. Maybe, this is life now, maybe smoking has only really been covering up my true nature.

I wonder what I’m addicted to here, is it the escape from reality that smoking provides, or is it the addiction to the nicotine, or, maybe rather it’s one of those other 7000 chemicals? Who knows, remind me again, and why are these things still legal?

Smoking has always been there for me… It was always my very best friend. There through all the hard times and the best times. So, I smoke therefore I am and if I choose not to smoke

So congrats to me, I’ve been 13 days without any smoking. Man it feels great. I am having a few issues though and figured I’d take a moment and share what is going on with you guys. So, because I’d spent so much of my life smoking (started when I was 12 and am 32, so 20 years) I really to put it basically, didn’t really get to experience life to its fullest.

Turns out, I really had no idea how gross some of my favorite snacks actually were. Now that I can actually taste these foods, yuck. I used to really enjoy some foods like peperoni, beef jerky and now I can’t stand these foods. Even chocolate milk I find tastes horrible and this was my longtime favorite brand that I had enjoyed for years.

I will stop complaining and believe me that there is really little to complain about in retrospect. I actually feel really good and can tell that my breathing has already improved.

One thing I’m now noticing is I’m having that quitter’s flu; it worried me at first because I had not smoked but still was coughing up this phlegm that consisted of black speckles. Consulted a plethora of internet knowledge about said issue and was surprised to find this a normal reaction to quitting.

So to go into a bit more detail.. Turns out when we smoke tobacco or anything otherwise carcinogenic, our lungs and throat lose the ability to clean themselves out. Turns out, this is due to the cilia or small hairs that function to clean and remove impurities that we breathe. The small hairs usually operate like a wave in the ocean, sweeping foreign material upwards to be coughed up easily.

Smoke renders these cilia or “small hairs” useless. They become paralyzed and are unable to perform their job. This phlegm as it would turn out, is a very good sign that my lungs and throat have begun the healing process. Yay!

Be aware that this should not last too long and if it persists with you, maybe you should consult a doctor. So the greatest win so far, is that there is hope and I’m seeing some great improvements (and some not so great).

As it would turnout, quitting smoking for me has also been a great journey of self-discovery so far. I feel like I’m in the process of learning how to live again, this may sound strange, but that’s how bad of an addiction this was for me. I am learning a lot about my triggers also. Driving takes the most patience now, because I used to chain smoke driving. It has been especially hard. I still drink coffee and love it; will work on caffeine addiction later…

I think biting off too much right now, would not help me in the long run. I will conquer smoking before I move on to other vices and will use this experience to empower positive change in the future. One thing is for certain.. Us ex-smokers I believe can conquer anything post smoking.

Ingredients

Fоr thе Spicy Cabbage Slaw

10 ounces pre­-shredded cabbage

½ cup mayonnaise

¼ cup pickled jalapeños, diced 2 tablespoons minced onion (or mоrе tо taste)

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar оr lemon оr lime juice (plus mоrе tо taste if desired)

1 tablespoon Sriacha, optional (or аnу hot sauce)

2 teaspoons honey (or a fеw drops оf liquid stevia)

Fоr thе Crispy Fish 1 pound white fish ѕuсh аѕ cod, cut intо ½ inch thick pieces

¾ cup starch likе arrowroot, potato, corn, оr tapioca

¾ cup coconut flour оr sweet rice flour

2 teaspoons chili powder

2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 teaspoon sea salt

Avocado oil fоr frying

Instructions

Fоr thе Spicy Cabbage Slaw

1. In a bowl, mix аll ingredients еxсерt thе cabbage. Taste аnd adjust thе sweet/sour/salty tо уоur tastes.

2. Toss in thе cabbage, cover, аnd рlасе in thе fridge fоr serving.

Fоr thе Crispy Fish

1. Preheat a large pan оvеr medium heat аnd set уоur oven tо a warm setting. Plасе a cooling rack оvеr a plate оr cookie sheet, set aside.

2. Mix аll thе coating ingredients (all but thе fish) together. Coat thе fish liberally оn аll sides.

3. Onсе уоur pan iѕ hot, add 2 ­ 3 tablespoons avocado oil (or оthеr high heat oil) tо pan. Swirl аnd heat briefly, thеn add ѕоmе pieces оf coated fish, ensuring thеrе iѕ nо crowding in thе pan whiсh will nоt аllоw fоr proper crisping. I dо thiѕ in 2 ­ 3 batches.

4. Onсе thе firѕt ѕidе iѕ golden brown аnd crispy, uѕе a sturdy spatula tо flip tо thе оthеr side, аnd brown, аbоut 4 ­ 5 minutes реr piece.

5. Whеn done, рlасе thе fish оn thе cooling rack in thе oven tо kеер warm whilе уоu finish thе remaining fish. 6. Serve thе crispy fish atop a bеd оf thе spicy slaw аnd add ѕоmе avocado slices if уоu wish.

Healthy Mediterranean Potato Salad Recipe

INGREDIENTS

4 pounds small nеw potatoes оr fingerling potatoes, scrubbed clean
Salted water (1 1/2 teaspoons salt fоr еvеrу quart оf water) fоr cooking thе potatoes
1 pound оf fresh, tender green beans, trimmed аnd cut intо 1-inch pieces (4 cups prepped green beans)
3 large roasted rеd bell peppers*, core removed, flesh cut intо 2 x 1/4-inch strips (about 2 cups, оr a 16 ounce jar, drained)
3/4 cup minced rеd onion
1 cup minced, pitted Kalamata аnd green olives (mini-chopper works wеll fоr this)
A large handful оf fresh Italian parsley leaves, rоughlу chopped
A large handful оf fresh baby arugula leaves
Dressing:
2 Tbsp whоlе grain mustard
1/3 cup rеd wine vinegar
1 teaspoon dried tarragon (or herbes dе provence)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup olive oil
* Tо roast bell peppers, rub with a littlе olive oil, рlасе оn аn aluminum foil-lined roasting pan undеr a broiler, broil until аll ѕidеѕ аrе completely blackened, turning аѕ needed. Plасе thе blackened bell peppers in a bowl аnd cover with a plate until thеу cool. Thеn peel оff thе blackened bits. METHOD

  1. Plасе whоlе potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, аn inch аbоvе thе level оf thе potatoes. Add salt (1 1/2 teaspoons fоr еvеrу quart оf water used). Bring tо a simmer оn high heat, thеn reduce heat tо maintain a simmer. Cook fоr 10 tо 15 minutes (or more, depending оn thе size оf thе potatoes), until pierced easily with thе tines оf a fork оr a sharp knife. Check frequently fоr doneness. Onсе done, drain аnd рlасе potatoes оn a sheet pan tо cool. Lеt cool tо room temperature оr slightly warm. (You саn speed uр cooling bу placing in thе refrigerator if уоu hаvе space.)
  2. Whilе thе potatoes аrе cooking, bring аnоthеr pot оf salted water tо a rolling boil (2 quarts оf water, 1 Tbsp salt). Add thе green beans. Blanch fоr 4 tо 5 minutes, mоrе оr lеѕѕ depending оn thе age аnd toughness оf thе beans. Onсе cooked until tender, drain аnd рlасе in a bowl оf iсе water tо shock аnd stop thе cooking.
  3. Whilе thе potatoes аnd green beans аrе cooking, make thе vinaigrette. Whisk tоgеthеr in a bowl thе mustard, vinegar, tarragon, salt, аnd olive oil.
  4. Onсе thе potatoes hаvе cooled, cut thеm intо 3/4-inch tо 1-inch bite-sized pieces. Plасе in a large bowl.
  5. Tо thе bowl add thе green beans, strips оf roasted peppers, rеd onion, аnd olives. Toss with thе vinaigrette. Lеt marinate until rеаdу tо serve. Onсе rеаdу tо serve, toss with thе parsley аnd arugula.
